Why Emidat?
At Emidat, we are building the first climate-native product management system for building material manufacturers.
Emidat aims to decarbonise building materials, making up 11% of global GHG emissions. We collect data from physical production processes, generate a digital product passport with verified environmental data and make it usable along the value chain. In short: One solution to assess, design, buy, sell and manage products - with environmental impact at the core.
Embodied carbon is emitted on day zero and can never be reduced later, while global floor area is set to double by 2060. From January 2026, EU regulation (CPR) requires verified environmental data. 430,000 manufacturers will need it, and only about 2,500 have it today. That gap is our market.
Why now?
Embodied carbon in buildings is hugely underserved
While everyone is looking to reduce emissions from heating, cooling, and electricity in existing building stock (operational carbon), the share of embodied carbon in buildings keeps increasing.
Embodied carbon is emitted at Day 0. It cannot be reduced later in the life of a building and the earlier carbon is emitted, the more harmful it is to our atmosphere.
At the same time, the global building floor area is expected to double by 2060. This means that every month, we are adding the equivalent of New York City’s building stock to the world. And we’ll need huge material quantities to build out the infrastructure that will support a decentralized renewable energy grid.
Beyond GHG emissions, building materials are responsible for the major share of global waste, they have immense biodiversity impact and water usage just to name a few.
The environmental impact of building materials won’t stop mattering anytime soon
What’s driving demand?
Regulatory tailwinds will force industry adaptation
Building material manufacturers are increasingly asked for verified environmental data for their products (EPDs) as part of their customers’ purchasing decisions.
Demand is driven by voluntary certificates like LEED, BREEAM, DGNB (to sell the building more expensively), by better bank loan conditions (e.g. QNG in Germany) and by upper CO₂ caps in various countries (e.g. UK, Netherlands, Denmark).
Additionally, upcoming regulation (CPR) increasingly makes verified environmental data a requirement for any construction product sold in the EU from January 2026 onwards. Suddenly, 430k construction material manufacturers in Europe need this data, where only about 2.500 have EPDs today.
Manufacturers currently expect costs between €15-25k per EPD and timelines of up to 12 months to create and verify them. When they get an order that requires EPDs and they don't have it, they run the risk of losing the contract. EPDs are often done with external consultancies, which results in a complete black box.
Emidat solves this with pre-verified platform that automates EPD / DPP creation and the use of this data.
